Albany homeowners, schools and businesses were praised at the annual Keep Albany Beautiful 2011 Awards on November 9. Organisers said judging proved difficult because of the large number of entries in all categories.
Albany Gardens Lifestyle Village took out the Business Garden of the Year Award. Congratulations to our “Village People” on their great work.

To celebrate Camp and Care with BIG4 – Australia’s BIGgest night of charitable camping, BIG4 Albany Gardens Holiday Resort is encouraging locals to enjoy a night under the stars, for a nominal $20 site fee to be donated by the Park to the Albany Regional Hospital and Pregnancy Problem House. The camping night of night’s is happening on Friday 11 November 2011.
Camp and Care with BIG4 encourages people to try camping for the first time and to explore a holiday destination close to home, while helping a worthy cause. Guests staying at BIG4 Albany Gardens Holiday Resort will be treated to a BBQ, and will be able to enjoy the Park’s great facilities, and great local attractions that Albany offers.
Park Spokesperson Vanessa Bradshaw says the event is a great opportunity to grab the kids or a group of friends and experience the thrill of camping. “You can make a splash in the pool, enjoy a game of tennis, and make new friends around our BBQs. All you need is $20, your camping gear and a sense of adventure – we provide the rest!” Vanessa says.

Art, flowers and entertainment… who could ask for more?
In March 2011, Albany Gardens was thrilled to be showcased by the
Caravan & Motorhome Magazine.
Caravan & Motorhome On Tour is a 60 minute travel DVD that is packaged in a plastic sleeve with the Caravan & Motorhome Magazine.
The current program is about a couple who are travelling around Australia in their caravan, filming at Australia’s top 15 destinations over a year long period. The upcoming DVD is focusing on the Margaret River region including a road trip to Albany. This program showcases the various things to see and do in the region, and promotes places to stay, including…*drumroll*… Albany Gardens!
The ‘On Tour’ crew spent 2 days staying at Albany Gardens Holiday Resort and joined us for a special Sunday Roast get-together to support the Cancer Council’s ‘Relay for Life’ campaign.

The Boat Shed Markets will be held every Sunday morning and will offer a range of fresh and smoked meat and seafood, fruit and vegetables, dairy foods including cheese, yoghurt and ice cream, eggs, bread, hot food, coffee and more.
10 June 2011 – Albany Entertainment Centre.
Conducted by Carlien Trotter, the concert will feature the Albany Choral Society accompanied by a twelve piece Albany Chamber Orchestra and several guest performers. Some of the pieces to be performed included Mozart’s ‘Alphabet Song’, ‘The Cradle Song’, ‘Ave Verum’, ‘Grazie Agl’inganni Tuoi’ and the final chorus from the Magic Flute ‘Die Zauberflote’. The main performance will be Mozart’s ‘Missa in C Major’.
11-28 June 2011 – Vancouver Arts Centre.
In 2007, artist Simon Gilby was commissioned to produce a group of 10 life size sculptures by a group of collectors, all with an interest in his work.
Each sculpture is based around the human form. Whilst the installation needs to be viewed as whole, each sculpture works as an individual entity, The sculptures are principally made from etched, welded and forged steel, combined with other incidental materials.
“Though some of the imagery tends towards the darkly gothic, the overall exhibition intends to express a hopeful yet conflicted humanity” Simon Gilby.

Western Australian Museum – Albany.
Mini Muses is a fun series of junior sessions (children 5 years and under) which will introduce your child to the wonderful native creatures of Western Australia.
The programs use elements of song, dance, games, puppetry, stories and a variety of hands on activities, allowing children to learn interesting aspects of wildlife habits and biology.

Prepare to be impressed when master musician Gene Peterson goes head to head with multi instrumentalist Adam Page, in this phenomenal musical showdown. ‘Loop the Loop’ showcases a musical battle like no other, as each artist attempts to out-play the other with their multitiude of musical abilities.
Sometimes quirky, often hilarious, at times unbelievable, but always impressive, ‘Loop the Loop’ offers the ultimate performance package for all ages.
25 June 2011 – Albany Entertainment Centre.
Presented by Men’s Resource Centre. Its back, and this year bigger than ever! Perennial local favourites the Southern Right Males, and last year’s surprise hit the Green Island Boys will be joined by zany Perth-based trio Ballpoint Penguins, and the innovative 9 voice ensemble Contraband for a night of music and merriment for men’s health.

James has been an Artist in Residence at the VAC since May. His exhibition ‘Arc of Grace’ showcases a varied selection of recent pieces including an inspiring current series combining clay, timber and glass. As an emerging WA artist, James’s sculptural pottery has received critical praise winning the 2010 Canning Art Award, (3D) and a recent near sell out exhibition in Cottesloe. - Organic, original and uplifting sculptural ceramics not to be missed.

Albany Weekender 2010 Classic ‘round-the-houses’ track (Sunday 6th June 2011)
2011 Event
The Weekender Albany Classic weekend is a family friendly event with activities to satisfy everybody who comes along – we know it’s not just about the cars. This event is traditionally held over the June long weekend each year. For 2011 the Albany Classic encompasses the Mount Clarence Hill Climb on Saturday and the ‘Round-the-Houses’ re-enactment and festival on Sunday.
Day 1 Saturday
The Mt Clarence lookout hosts a fast and exciting hill climb event that attracts big fields of entrants in a wide range of vehicles. Head up Mount Clarence to see the cars start at the bottom of Apex drive. This is an “all out” speed test with historic cars timed for a run up the hill. The cars can be seen up close in the pit area.
Officials will be setting up from sunrise and the first cars are expected to run at 9:00 am.
Day 2 Sunday
The centre of Albany is converted to a motorsport circuit complete with Armco barriers and a state of the art timing system. The CBD comes alive to the roar of historic motor sport as a wide variety of historic category vehicles compete against the clock in a trial of regularity.
Everything from pre war specials with wooden or wire spoke wheels to mighty Aussie V8′s. Check out British and Italian sports cars, exotic open wheeler racers from the 1950s, 60s and 70s, touring cars from Morris minor to Ford Falcon and a list of other wonderful machinery dating back to the 1920s!
Festival
Albany’s main street and parks are buzzing from 9.00am until late afternoon with live entertainment, activities, markets, car displays, movies, museum exhibitions, Great Southern tastings with local restaurants and businesses providing Classic hospitality. A wide variety of foods will be available with heaps of activities for the kids. Visit the festival page for more details.
