Join us as we celebrate the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives. To cooperate means to work together on a common enterprise or project, to act jointly or a willingness to assist.
We take a close look at cooperative based cultures starting with our nearest neighbours Indonesia and the tropical paradise of Bali.
Balinese culture is steeped in a long history of traditional cooperative systems which allowed its people to thrive for many centuries. The Balinese learnt how to grow their rice crops through cooperative irrigation, their village life is based on whole of community cooperation from fishing through to wedding celebrations.
We will be exploring the cooperative techniques behind rice growing through mini rice paddy models and learning how the cooperative banjar is central to all of social life in Bali. You can find out why villages had to cooperate with each other to survive and flourish and why cooperative living is core to Balinese beliefs and values.
Children can experience the paradise of Bali in a traditional banjar (village hut), barter in the market place, play congklak, try their hand at the musical instrument gemalan, help decorate temple columns or paint their own Balinese goddess sculpture.
Cost: free – $4. Ages: All ages. No bookings required.

Boy & Bear to Remember the Mexican In a National Tour!
Australia is in for one big treat from Boy & Bear, as they look to thank their fans for what has been a year of big journeys and greater accomplishments for the Sydney quintet. From Adelaide to Albury, Brisbane to Bunbury, Cairns to Canberra, Boy & Bear will be dropping into every corner of the country in May to reflect on where it all began and give a nod to those who made it happen.
It doesn’t seem that long ago that the nation was falling in love with one of Boy & Bear’s pivotal first singles, ‘Mexican Mavis’. Creeping slowly through the national airwaves, discovered by music lovers and settling itself in minds across the country, ‘Mexican Mavis’ was an accidental statement of intent. The knowledge of the five gentlemen from Sydney grew, generated mainly by their passionate followers, and soon the gathering that Boy & Bear found themselves in front of had turned into a congregation.
Boy & Bear has grown into a bigger beast then even the five core members could have ever imagined. Their EP, driven by singles ‘Mexican Mavis’ and ‘Rabbit Song’ saw them tour internationally, gain praise from tough critics and get the nod from triple j, winning the Unearthed JAward. Now their debut album Moonfire is receiving all the attention, securing five ARIA awards, a prestigious shortlist nomination for The AMP and entering triple j’s Hottest 100 three times, with single ‘Feeding Line’ reaching the top five.
But this is one band to not forget their roots, keeping themselves firmly grounded with friends and family in Sydney, they now look forward to sharing their success in the form of a huge 25 date tour. Playing intimate rooms in regional areas, they have intentionally kept capacities low to make for some very special performances for those who have supported the band from the beginning.

In 1992, John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta took to the small stage at the Tilbury Hotel, Woolloomooloo, Sydney with their debut production of Looking Through A Glass Onion. What was an initially a one week booking quickly sold out and extended into a six week, sell out season. Thus the original seed of Looking For A Glass Onion was born.
Fast forward 20 years and after many successful and sold out Glass Onion tours, John and Stewart have decided to return to their ‘up close and personal’ intimate two man show tour commencing in January 2012.
A homage to the music, mystery and memory of John Lennon. The show is not a cut-and-paste biography of Lennon or an emulation of the original recordings. On stage, with shadows from the lighting arrangement fluttering over his face as he explores the essence of the man through song and spoken word. Waters, becomes synonymous with Lennon. He shies away from imitating the artist, but so emotive is his performance, it lulls the audience into believing anything is possible. It’s part concert and part biography, though it doesn’t seek to tell the full story of Lennon’s life.
For the audience this is either an emotional trip down memory lane or a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icons of our time.
Age Suitability: 15+. Some coarse language
